That can't be completely true: I'm using fetchmail and my spamassassin is using some rbl tests and catching spam that way. Look at a report (edited to avoid false triggers - I hope):
But you are *still* downloading the mail rather than rejecting it prior. I have routed all my list mail thru gmail. Of the mail still being sent to my own server, 75-80% is rejected by procmail rbl checks.
