I just installed 11.4 with KDE (clean install, 32-bit version, off the DVD), and installed vlc which is my preferred choice as a multimedia application (for TV viewing, DVD viewing, capturing TV programs).
However vlc will simply not start - the cursor bounces around but no vlc. [pruned]
When I tried to run VLC from the root shell, I've got an error message clearly saying it should not run as a root.
Same here.
In my case VLC (from Packman) under 11.4/KDE4 fails with "Floating point exception".
Yes.....I seem to recall that there was such an error statement showing up (about the floating point thingie)....
Googling revealed very strange workaround: run it under strace.
strace vlc works.
Hmmmm...I'll try this. Thanks for this. *BUT* *WHY* should anyone even have to do this when vlc works perfectly in the gnome environment, for chrissake!?
