BTW, kaffeine 'works' except that the bug I reported a couple of years ago still hasn't been resolved (on certain digital channels there is no sound) so this, too, is of no use to me. These channels are probably muted by default. Most notably, HDMI output is muted.
Start Konsole, and type "alsamixer". Select the soundcard with [F6] and use right-arrow to select channels, even past the right edge of the screen (keep pressing right-arrow). HDMI output is called SPDIF1 in my case. Also could be called IEC958...

It helps a lot to have KDE Multimedia control open and keep testing sound.
Which is something I have done to get sound working correctly even since the nonsense called pulseaudio was foisted on us :'( ......
After reaching a satisfactory state, become root: "su -"
Type "alsactl store"
Thanks for your response, but the problem with this is that I also use, and have used for years, xine and with xine there are *no* hassles, and never have been, at all with sound on the digital HD channels. There are no problems with these channels when I use vlc (and just to avoid any forthcoming "AHAs" :-) this was on an earlier version of openSUSE). The bottom line is that kaffeine is a dud. (I only mentioned kaffeine in my opening post simply to indicate that while I cannot vlc to work for some unknown reason kaffeine works, in as far as that it starts, I can get TV pictures and even get sound on all non-digital HD channels,) BC -- Great Man reaches complete understanding of the main issues; Petty Man reaches complete understanding of the minute details."
