I am running a Compaq DL760 with eight 900mhz CPUs and 16 giga of memory on SuSE Enterprise Server with 2.4.16, I do not think there is a limit up to 16 if I remember, but Intel Chipsets do not perform well over 8way. In fact the Compaq has a Fusion Chip they developed for the 8way I am using. I remember there was once a project to do 32way with Microsoft Datacenter, but that never really went anyplace. I think I am correct to say it has to do with NUMA (Non Uniform Memory Address). Of course the I/O spin locks (meaning single spin lock) and scheduler need improvements, but nobody is making 8+ CPUs on Intel right now anyway, even the Itanium systems we have here running SuSE Enterprise 7 are 4way, and only 16 giga. In theory these systems are supposed to have more like 64 giga memory. I will say that the early versions of 2.4 were not as clean as 2.4.16 in the high memory use when we did a lot of LDAP scaling on the above systems, in-fact BSD was better. But not so right now.
