Did you tell it explicitly for suseconfig to NOT modify your system? I seem to remember a post to that effect. Make sure susconfig IS able to update your system. It may take a bit of getting used to, but it DOES work very well. If that is not the problem, maybe it is name service caching daemon (NOT name server). Try rcnscd restart.
