I like the idea of newsgroups. I also would like an IRC channel with bot or IRC Server for SuSE users with different channels, developers, users etc. I find one SuSE channel on EFnet, with 3 guys in it all the time. Probably they are trying to get people to join them, so they can discuss SuSE linux. It would be very helpful to get some real time psuedo-response from a IRC channel. There are lot of channels dedicated to specific distributions. Debian has their own IRC server and has very active developers chating and helping (when feeling generous) the users. Hopefully, SuSE developers will setup an IRC server dedicated to make SuSE more accessable. Just my .02 cents. ...and HOW would a NEWSGROUP be easier to find what you're looking for with all the extra trash/noise that would undoubtedly exist? How is that better than a mailing list?
A newsgroup isn't always better than a mailing list. But there are many people who would ask a question / get involved in a newsgroup, who wouldn't do so with a mailing list. Mailing lists are high volume, you have to subscribe to them & so, they are not viable to everyone. - You can't just pop into a mailing list every once & a while like you would with usenet. It would be great to have a mailing list as well as a newgroup, for some, one is better than the other.
I think a newsgroup would be good for name recognition of SuSE. It would sit right next to the Red Hat and Debian groups in linux.suse.*. If nothing else, SuSE may get more defections from RH and others. I switch to SuSE when I saw it at Borders and was having lots of trouble with Red Hat. But most people have never even heard of SuSE.
