I have a new installation of Suse 9.1 from ftp plus on line updates, via yast2.
Apache2 dies during startup if I have both php and mod_auth_mysql modules loaded. It's enough to remove either one and apache starts without problems.
There is a clash between symbols of php4-recode and libmysqlclient. I think it should not happen due to the used dlopen() flags... I'll look into it.

Peter,
thanks for this reply. Is there anything I can do to help debug this?
John
I commented out the recode.so line in /etc/php.ini and the server starts so this adds weight to the idea that the problem is a conflict between recode and the other modules. (BTW moving recode.so above the imap and mysql entries in php.ini didn't work.) Can I realistically run a webserver and php without recode? What do I lose? Or should I move to an earlier Suse version to avoid this issue? John
