My original problem was not cured by moving ~/.Skype and I am sure there must be something else in my /home directory causing Skype to fail. I knew my sound system had to be configured correctly because it was working perfectly well with another users log-in. Out of boredom I started going through the Linux sound FAQs in the Skype forums, where I found a description of exactly the same symptoms - Skype wouldn't call out and would lock-up when trying to disconnect- doing so because the sound servers where unavailable to it. So, I tried starting Skype under a wrapper and it started working again. So, the search is now on to find the file that locks the sound server from Skype on a user by user basis. I immediately suspect the /.DCOPserver files sitting in my home directory, especially since I don't actually know what they're about. I've not touched them for precisely the same reason!
