Hmmm still sounds exactly like the problem I had with kdebase3-3.2.1-68.15.i586.rpm. Sorry it didn't work for you... One thing to note, you want to rename/remove the files within .config and .local not the directories themselves. Although I believe they would get created again. Also - don't forget to log out/in again (not sure if this is needed to re-read the menu config)

I'm using KDE 3.2.3 myself-- renamed .local and .config and seeing what that does.
(Tried it-- Still no little "expand" triangles...)
I did ctrl-alt-backspace after renaming the files... Would a complete logout (from Linux) make a difference?
I think there may be something in the .kde directory iteself. I renamed it (lost ALL my settings...) but the little triangles came back.
It's the little things that get to me :)
Solved, Kinda... ~/.kde/shared/config/kickerrc... renamed it, and now the menu behaves as I expected it to. I didn't really see anything in there that struck me as a "dont_display_triangles=NO" setting...
