Ding, Ding.. I think I remember something that will help you both.. You need to go in to /ect/X11/xdm/xdm-conf
comment out the last line...(or what should be the last line)
! SECURITY: do not listen for XDMCP or Chooser requests ! Comment out this line if you want to mangae X terminals with xdm ! DisplayManager.requestPort: 0
Change the last line to:
!DisplayManager.requestPort: 0
you will then need to run suseconfig, you will need to play with it a little.. i don't remember it you need to shutdown x first or not... before it will actually alow you to connect.

Hi Scott, so far I have downloaded and installed Cygwin with the X server and then run it after the installation, but all I get is a X window but I cant seem to connect to the SuSE v8 box I must be doing something wrong I will keep trying kindest regards for all you efforts John Proctor
