Sure. You can be running KDE while updating via synaptic. But why not just shutdown KDM and use apt's commandline? All you have to do is log out of KDE and shutdown KDM. Then log in at a prompt and type this as root.
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
or start the download when you go to bed (logout of kde, login as root in a console and type; - init 3 - apt-get upgrade; halt or apt-get install <pkgs>; halt SO while you're snoozing your computer is doing the hardwork :)) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
