I find this a bit puzzling... I'm also running SuSE8.0 with find-utils and all, updatedb in cron, and I see no memory leaks. Strange. I am using a custom compilation of the standard SuSE8 kernel (which is 2.4.18) but I can't think of anything that I've changed that should effect things. I'm interested to see how this turns out.
Well, my machine at work (P3 933, 384M RAM) doesn't exhibit the memory leak...
I followed this thread and wondered if any of my recent server installs with SuSE 8.0 had a potential memory leak. So, I set up a cron script to log free memory in a text file every day for the last 13 days on my production web server that has the locate/updatedb stuff. The free memory decreased slightly for about a week, then increased, then decreased, then increased. The bottom line is that I see no evidence of a memory leak.
