Hi, everyone. I been having a terrible time trying to get MPlayer to play a video clip that's in .wmv format. When I try to play the clip I get an error message from MPlayer that says: "Sorry this file format is not recognized/supported ==== If this file is an AVI, ASF or MPEG stream please contact the author!"
Using the shell I obtained the file using the wget command along with the URL.
MPlayer does play mpegs without problem.
I'm also having problems trying to install some RPMs that I've been told will enhance MPlayer and allow it to decode other types of files. Forgive me if I have the terminology wrong, but I believe these are called codecs. I have been able to install 16 of the files but not the following 5:
1) ffmpeg-0.4.6-2.pm.1.i586.rpm 2) gxine-0.3.3-0.pm.0.i686.rpm 3) kaffeine-0.3.2-0.pm.0.i586.rpm 4) kdemultimedia3-video.rpm 5) kxine-cvs-200305110026.i586.rpm
I have tried using Yast to install the files but I get various error messages. Some of them tell me that items are missing or there are conflicts. For example the following are "missing":
1) imlib2 2) libavcodec.so 3) libImlib2.so.1 4) libxine1
What are these missing elements and where can I find them so that these RPMs will then install?
Any help you can provide this newbie would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Gil
Mplayer will play everything I have sent it and it did not take 16 packages. Just go to http://packman.links2linux.org/ (the english side of packman) then go to mplayer. Download all the files, I think there are 9 rpm's. Install all the files, as I recall I used YaST. The sequence of installation is important and I do not remember what the sequence should be. Try lib??? files 1st and mplayer last.
Once all the files are installed mplayer will handle avi, wmv, mpeg, realplayer and probably other formats I do not have.
When I have tried to "upgrade" mplayer to the lastest release candidate I get the error message about file formats that you describe at the beginning of this thread. Just reinstall MPlayer-0.90-1.i686.rpm and everything works again.

Ralph, those are the files (2 binaries, 7 codecs) that I used. I installed and when the .wmv file would not play I installed them all again. Still no luck. As to the installation order...??? There is nothing on the page that says anything about installing any of the files in any order. I installed the player and the skins first, then the 7 binaries. When I install the Mplayer on that page (using Yast) it asks me to insert the SuSE 8.2 disk. I have no idea why it wants the disk, but it asks for it every time. The other files all just load from the RPM as I recall. I thought it was odd that the RPM for the package (MPlayer-0.90-1.i686.rpm) would not simply install -- that it insisted on the SuSE disk -- but I just followed instructions! That is the only version of MPlayer that I have ever had (to the best of my knowledge.) I'm stumped. Gil
