I'm sure I've had exactly the same error. I had a look at the source code for my last gimp-print build and I think I can recall the solution: Install readline from series a of your 7.3 disks (disk 1). I certainly seem to have done this during a gimp-print build on 7.3. If that doesn't work # make -k install should give you a working gimp-print. You may find escputil doesn't work, but you need to configure access to the printer carefully or run escputil as root to get it to work anyway. escputil is a commandline program that tells you how much ink is left in your printer, prints test pages and cleans the print heads. It is included in gimp-print but is actually pretty much standalone code.
