Looks correct, but, why did you even bother with a disklabel
or a partition at all in this case?
Because the msdos disklabel has a 2TB limit and I need more than 2TB. Couldn't create it through Yast, so parted did the trick.
That's not what I asked. I didn't ask why msdos disklabel doesn't work. I asked why you bothered to use _any_ disklabel or partition at all when I told you in a previous post that in this case you don't need gpt OR msdos disklabel, nor any partition within either one. just mkfs <options> /dev/sdb I'm not saying what you did was wrong exactly, just that it's an unnecessary complication. ~~~~~~~ Brian, that is what was asked. You asked why and my response is the answer to the why. Another responder to this post sent an interesting howto. Never played with 'parted' at the CLI before and it was a good experience. It the past, I've need to partition the HD before putting a filesystem on it; Yast would fail if I didn't. Seemed consistent to make a partition, while getting some experience playing with a new tool. Actually, after rereading your post, you did mention making a disklabel, "you can create a gpt disklabel in parted manually at the command line". You also mentioned making smaller partitions, which was not something I wanted. Next time, however, I'll write a filesystem to an un-partitioned disk and give that a go.
