This is the procedure I used to fix a problem installation having the following symptoms: 1. YaST Installation proceeds normaly until installing of the base package, then it ends with the message: "An error occurred during installation!" 2. LILO does not run (Non-booting) 3. Installation root password corrupted (Login incorrect) 4. Low memory (4-8M RAM) INSTALLING WITHOUT YaST ----------------------- 1. When YaST return the error message, enter ALT-2 2. Install everything in a1 cd /var/adm/mount/suse/a1 rpm - Uvh --root=/mnt *.rpm --nodeps 3. Repeat installation of package devs.rpm (it fails the first time) rpm - Uvh --root=/mnt devs.rpm --nodeps 4. Install kernel cd /var/adm/mount/suse/images rpm - Uvh --root=/mnt k_i386.rpm --nodeps 5. Run lilo cd /var/adm/mount/suse/inst-sys/lib/YaST2/bin ./dolilo /mnt FIXING THE NON-BOOTING SYSTEM ----------------------------- 6. Reboot and log on using a boot floppy with these options: Boot: zimage root=/dev/hda3 init=/bin/sh boot=/dev/hda1 (use zimage, linux or whatever you used) 7. Run yast 8. Run LILO under System Administration 9. Run kernel under System Administration 10.Update root password (User/under System Administration) 11.Update System Select minimal system package, and start (YaST should delete 13 packages, and add 11) 12.Exit YaST -- Finished (Should boot from hard disk).
