I still have this problem with vlc in 12.1 as I describe above, but I finally got 12.2 Milestone 1 to install and behave properly.
In 12.2 Milestone 1 vlc behaves as before and without losing sound when one changes the desktop/workspace.
As there is no version of vlc in videolan.org for oS 12.2 yet I had to install vlc from (?)packman. Maybe this is where the difference lies? Probably. I have 2 tumbleweeds, a 12.2 factory and an 11.2 evergreen and do not have the problem but I *only* use videolan for *the* restricted requirement not provided by packman. Usually their package versions of vlc are the same within a day or two. Good policy: don't mix-em[tm!].
Yes, as I already stated, I have heard "don't mix-em" but I have installed vlc from the videolan.org using the '1-click insall' there (and therefore have their repo in my list of repos), and also have both the packman and libdvdcss repos selected - and I have never had any problem until this last update a few days ago. Right now I cannot be bothered with trying to figure out how to get vlc to behave as it did before and so will carry on with xine until it is time to install 12.2 :-) . (I remember Peter Nikolic having lots of hassles with vlc not that long ago. I now wonder if his hassles were the result of what we are now talking about here: vlc from videolan.org vs vlc from packman? No matter though, I think he said he is dropping oS and going away to use Windows or something....... :-) .)
