No, its not senseless. After all, there are many other repositories that can deal with updates anyway, ignoring the official ones. For example, I use the Kernel_Stable repository for my kernel updates rather than the official 13.2 repository. There also the Mozilla repository, language, LibreOffice and many more. Inopportune to make the change NOW. Confusing for someone not used to dealing with alternative repositories, yes.
