Which version did you try? I have it running here and at work, version 2.3 (also 1.2 worked). Did you add the appropriate message command to smb.conf? It will even receive messages when not running (being a GUI app, it is not always running.). On mine, though, the message needs to be sent to the machine name not the user name.
