Does it help you to disable the check box "Tools/Options/OpenOfifce.org/Accessibility/Automatically detect high contrast mode of operating system"?
Wohoo! That fixed it. Not in a million years would I have thought that disabling something under Accessibility would allow the icons to change. You nailed that one!
I'll bet since I use a dark theme, that is tripping the high-contrast setting to always show the high-contrast icons. That needs fixing. Here is a screenshot of the color scheme I use with OO in kde3 (looks the same everywhere due to gnome-settings-daemon):
I agree that it is a bug. It should be possible to force another icon theme from the "Tools/Options.../OpenOffice.org/View" dialog. The highcontrast theme should be just preferred. Could you please report it into bugzilla?

Thanks Petr, you need a raise, more vacation and a corner office! I hope the powers that be are -- listening!
It is nice to read this. I am happy that I helped.
Petr, It's https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592542 "Dark Theme - OpenOffice 3.2 build 9319 - Can't Change Toolbar Icons due to Accessibility Autodetect High Contrast" Thanks again for your help. -- David C.
