Well it helps if you let us know if you are running Gnome or KDE because there are different sound capabilities and controls with each. Also, is it a lap top, desktop, or what? Basically, you are looking for a mixer utility, which will allow you to turn on and control some of the outputs of the sound system. Also look for physical controls on the computer. Newer version of the sound system honor these as well as the software controls.
