If I now take care that gal-0.23 (instead of newer gal-0.24) is being installed (delivering libgal.so.21) and try again again I get:
pilchard:~ # apt -s install abiword2 gnucash gtkhtml gnome-spell Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. As gnome-spell is only available from CDs, I guess that a new version must be delivered with the rest of the gnome2 pkgs....

I really need to take the time to learn how to get apt setup correctly. But I keep putting it off. There is actually something stranger going on with gnome. I had already finished the installs by brute --force and rebuilt the db for good measure, rebooted the system, and installed other stuff before I got that first dependency list. Next thing I know, I had a huge gnome dependency list in YaST, and it sucked in a 10 meg file form my image of the DVD. I think it was bonobo-activation-2.2.4-38.i586.rpm. I also believe the dependencies I listed aren't that big of a deal after looking them over. The current problem I have with gnome seems kdmrc related. Unfortunately the kde.org documentation is not up to date, or so it seems, so I'm going to punt. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAK/EvH2SF0i7rrGwRAkhdAJsEFGV1BLpfGJKaBDaU6kLReW6BRQCgkZ1I X9nPy77CYncH5qrbBXeLbX4= =xb5v -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
