One bit of new information. If I enter the wrong password the screen flashes and returns with something like "password failed". If I enter the correct password the screen returns with the notation of wrong password.
AH!
So that means you ARE successfully logging in, then promptly getting logged out. Something is wrong with your start-up script somewhere.
Could there be a clue in .xsession-errors?
What DM are you using? Have you tried a different one?
Pending a proper solution, try logging in on a vtty and starting a session with startx. For that to work you may need to run as root 'chmod 4711 /usr/bin/Xorg' first. A crash instead of clean exit may mean John's right about needing a proprietary video driver. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
