Hey Rodd, Ok what I can see is that your power supply might not have enough power for it. It would be nice if you email me more about the setup of your box. Like what voltages and stuff is your power supply. As for your temps yes they are a bit on a high side, if I were you I would first check the seating of the heatsink they tend to move around a bit when you install them... I will assume that you are using some type of thermal paste. I have a simmilar setup for 2 of my servers where one is an amd 1500+ and one is 1800+ and they both run at around 52C and 42C but I am using those 45 dollar alpha pal 8045 heatsinks. --Roman On Sun, Jul 07, 2002, Robert C. Running SuSE 8.0 Pro....what are the average temps for an AMD XP 1600? If you care to read my problems, I've detailed them below....
I have an ECS K7S5A mobo and recently swapped out an AMD 1Ghz for another AMD XP 1600+. Before the swap I updated my bios to the latest version k7s5a020429lan. I reset all bios options to default (the default bios options limit the CPU and DDR RAM to 100Mhz clock speed) and booted into SuSE 8.0...I used it for several days and everything worked fine. As such my new AMD processor was clocking at 1050Mhz (as noted from boot screen) I changed this to CPU&DRAM=133Mhz to correctly reflect the new processor...at boot it recognized it as AMD XP 1600+. However, I soon ran into all sorts of troubles. I experienced very odd problems I did not have before. Konq crashed all the time (it actually rebooted my PC all by itself at one point) and the X server would not restart properly (among others). Eventually it would not boot-up at all. The longer is ran the worse things got...so I assume it's a temperature problem. The CPU temp as measured in the bios reached 68C/158F after about 1/2 hour. The case temp is around 90F. My CPU fan speed is around 5500rpm and I'm using the OEM heatsink. Apparently it's too hot?
Anyone else with this hardware combo experience similar problems? This CPU worked fine in another box running Win2k (with the same heatsink AFAIK). Could I have a voltage problem? Thanks for your help...
Your temperature is too high. I had to add an extra exhaust fan and remove the front panel of my case to bring my AMD 2000+ down to 50 C. I am using the fan and heatsink that came with the CPU/motherboard bundle I bought. Fan is a ThermalTake Volcano CU 6 fan. Not sure what heat sink is.
Also, there is a good chance your power supply is not adequate. I had to replace my 250Watt with a bigger one. I got a 430 watt, but 350 would almost certainly have been enough.
Before the above changes, the system ran at about 60 C and was completely unreliable -- boot failures, reboots every few minutes, etc. After the above changes it has been as solid as a rock.
