Steve, I know that there is a version of Mathematica for Linux available. For office suite, you may want to take a look at ApplixWare or StarOffice or WordPerfect Office. I have ApplixWare installed on one of my machines for a few users but I don't use it myself -- I use LaTeX. Regards, C. J. Tan On Thu, 25 Jun 1998, Steven T. Hatton wrote:

NOT true, in my (limited, newbie) experience. The manual really pertains, at least in part, to versions older that 5.2. Of equal concern is the quality of the German -> English translation. Sometimes it's just funny but clear, but other times there's no hope of getting the meaning intended.
Technical support is poor to nonexistent, except for the folks (SuSE and others) on this list. Phone support isn't toll free (in the US) and is only available on Tue and Fri. E-mail support has not worked for me 2 out of 2 times.

Howard,
Well, since I am usually the one to be posting about things I don't like, I guess I should take a moment to comment on what I do like. When I first got 5.1, I called the tech support number and found that they were available only during limited hours on Thursday. I bled all over the ppp setup until tech support Thursday. I got through to a guy who's english was almost exactly like that in the book. He got me fixed up and on my way in a matter of minutes. I expect that thier tech support will grow as the company grows. It is important that they grow with an eye toward maintaining quality. I have had other problems that I found overwhelming. These I have directed to this list. For the really important things I have received very good answers, in a timely manner. There are a few smaller issues that have gone unresolved.
I have found that as I learn more about Linux, I find experts here who know that much more than I. It is certainly this list that keeps me on the S.u.S.E. subscription list. I don't mind paying the money for the distribution. I believe it helps S.u.S.E. and Linux grow. If I remember correctly I have been using Linux for four months. I have an NT boot on this system that I rarely use anymore. When I port Mathematica over, and find an office product that is extensively compatible with M$ Office, I may slick the wasted NT partition and put it to good use.
The book could certainly benefit from the hand of a professional tech writer. It has been useful in many instances. I have found a few problems with XFree86, but overall I find this product amazingly well put together. When I find things I don't like I say so. I am nowhere near regretting the money that I have paid to S.u.S.E. I am sure they will improve the product as thier resources grow. If you look at the post I made a few hours before this one and read the stuff on InfoWorld's site, you will see that S.u.S.E. gets a very good thumbs up. This product is a winner and I'm happy to be associated with it.
