you are right that such thing should work. It works on my config (i386).
But this YaST part is one of the most unfriendly ever... and ever was, so if you happen to use the ncurse version and though use console input, why don't you change directly the /etc/sysconfig/apache2 file? it's not more difficult

I was avoiding manually editing the file because IIRC a manually edited file takes that file out from under SuSEConfig's control. I don't have a list of all the files it applies to, but I do recall it being an issue [God knows how long ago]. Somebody current will have to let us know if it still works that way. -- David C.
