I've compiled a half dozen kernels for SuSE 5.2, and never had a bit of trouble getting sound. Then I did a fress install with SuSE 5.3, compiled the same 2.0.35 kernel I used in 5.2, and had it fail, saying that sound must be compiled seperately (or something to that effect, I didnt save the message).
