Yes, a hold-over of backwards compatibility with that toy operating system, CP/M. [And yes, CP/M WAS a toy. It was written by one guy in his basement in the mid-1970's to use on his Altair (*?) Intel 8080 machine, which he distributed freely to hobbyists.
