ULTIMATELY everything gets executed by a binary. You could write a FUSE FS in perl, python, scala, ruby or even, $DEITY forbid!, javascript, but ULTIMATELY the interpreters for those languages are binaries. It strikes me that first working out the logic & algorithms of a new FS in a HLL makes a lot of sense.
