Well, I simply have no patience for an os that doesn't do what it should. I have already reinstalled 5.2 and everything is hunky dory, I just have to download a bunch of stuff that is obsolete on the 5.2 discs. No one has been a bigger advocate for S.u.S.E. as _the_ uberdist than I have, but I am not going to jump through hoops to make 5.3 do something that every other linux dist I have ever used has done without effort on my part: make noise after I have properly configured isapnp and my kernel. I hope S.u.S.E. 6.0 doesn't suffer from any major hiccups like that. Til then, I will continue to use 5.2, but 5.3 is already back in the box and if anyone wants it... Like I said earlier, while SaX doesn't work properly at this time, I think it is a step in the right direction if they get it right in future versions. Something really needs to be done about YaST, it's as slow as a Debian install floppy (that is REALLY REALLY slow for those of you who haven't run Debian). But I still love S.u.S.E., and I hope that future versions will match the excellence of 5.1 and 5.2 Mike Hostetler wrote:

If anyone could explain why sound is completely broken in 5.3 I could use some help. I have been compiling sound as a module since 2.0.29 and I have always had a perfectly functioning system. 5.3 won't load the module unless I manually insmod it, and then midi is still completely broken. I downloaded fresh 2.0.35 source to see if it was the 5.3 sources, but it's something else in the os because it displayed the same behaviour. This is _really_pissing_me_off_. I have compiled dozens and dozens of kernels since I started using S.u.S.E. with S.u.S.E. 5.1 and I am not doing anything differently and I am 4 kernels into 5.3 and none of them have had properly working sound.
When I installed 2.0.35 from the source, I copied over my .config file and did a make menuconfig to make sure that it was included. My sound worked fine (I have always had trouble with midi on my SB16, so I have never installed it . . .). I should note that I haven't received my copy of 5.3, yet. This experience was on 5.2 installing the tar.gz kernal source.
Therefore, try copying over the .config file. Hope it works
