Hi again.
I'll send to this list a post. That SOLVES the problem:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hi guys,
It took a while but I solved the problem, and now writing you this from a
fresh installed box.
In short: download the following directories again (ore at least the files
you need)
/pub/suse/i386/7.3/suse/setup (especially the descr dir !)
/pub/suse/i386/7.3/suse/images (at least the .inf files )
The long story:
The problem has something to do with the ftp-download we did.
I'm not 100% what went wrong because I tried and changed so many things..
Here goes..
Monday morning I wake up, late for work, have to hurry like hell, then
suddenly it hits me. I don't know if that ever happens to you, it's kinda
funny, I should be worrying about not getting even more late at work than I
already am, meanwhile all this stuff goes round in my head, stuff that
shouldn't be as important as it sometimes seems to be to me. NEED TO GET
THAT SUSE-INSTALL TO WORK ! D@MN$D !! Resistance is futile....
anyway...
You probably are aware of the two ways you can download from ftp, ascii and
binary, if not, you are now. Check your client, it'll have a feature to
switch. That's what I thought was causing the trouble.
The funny thing is, I never changed anything in my client. I'm mostly using
gftp and it's set auto, which means it checks for itself whether it should
use asccii or binary mode.
I compared the description files to the ones still on the server and there
were indeed some minor differences in file sizes.
I re-downloaded them (still in auto mode!) and for some bizarre reason they
now transferred in the right size. Done.
Or so I thought.
Yast. Install packages. Bang. Crash.
More work to do. So some relatives decided to visit me.
They always do. Don't get me wrong, I'm very fond of them. But they always
show up at the wrong time at my place.
Next day...(Today)
I started an installation directly from suse's ftp and since it's so busy
these days :-) it gave me a chance to see exactly what files it was getting
at the moment it all went wrong.
I had already figured out that the package descriptions are in the
/setup/descr dir (see above) along with some pre-configured selections.
First the package descriptions (in the chosen language .ser and .pkd
files), then the preconf selections (.sel files). Another file from that
same directory called info. I had already downloaded them again. They were
good.
Then some other files from the directory images were transferred, .inf
files, probably important for the kernel images.
Same procedure. Yast. Install packages and....
!!! VICTORY !!!
Now, I know where it went wrong, but I'm still not sure what went wrong and
why.
I did use another ftp-client (IglooFTP), just to make sure.
Another thing I changed was the ftp-server itself. First several hundred
packages I got from ftp2.suse.com, then I switched to ftp.gwdg.de which is
much, much faster (tip of the day).
Still I wouldn't dare to say it was either Suse's fault nor Gftp's.
Hope it'll help you any further, let me know if it does.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Jos van Kessel.
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.
