Hello list, I have been using SuSE 7.3 for over a year and have decided to upgrade to 8.1 professional. I have a couple questions though related to SCSI and gcc. I run some old SCSI2 hardware on my server, and one IDE hard drive. What I want to do is move everything onto SCSI by buying a new Ultra 160 SCSI hard drive, a new Ultra 2 SCSI controller (Adaptec 2940U2W in particular), and a IDE to SCSI bridge for my existing IDE hard drive for some extra space. This would create two SCSI chains, one for the Ultra 160 drive, one for the other SCSI2 stuff (CD-RW, DVD, Tape, old HD). The card is listed as having full support in the SuSE hardware database, but I just want to have someone with more experience verify that this should work before I start buying hardware. I'm not buying an Ultra160 controller as documentation I have read says that an Ultra Wide card should be able to handle my configuration. Also, I am the type that likes to install a lot of stuff from source. I usually install the base system from the CD's, then stuff I want full control over (e.g. MySQL, apache, php, etc) I compile/install myself. SuSE 8.1 has gcc 3.2, but is it also possible to compile with gcc 2.x? I ask because some of the apps I want to compile (e.g. courier-imap) advertise that they do not yet compile under gcc 3.2. Thanks for your help, I can't wait to get the upgrade started! Josh Trutwin http://trutwins.homeip.net
