Since fairly recent versions of Plasma 5 (all from Opensuse repositories) going back sometime earlier this year, I've noticed an annoying regression on in the compositor on my hardware. I use to be able to run with all the bling turned on, wobbly windows, transparency, several different effects, fades, zooms, etc - almost all the features offed by KDE. Most of that stuff still works, but now menus, both KDE main menu, as well as application menues get filled with squiggly lines. Attaching an example of a pull-down menu in Tbird. If I then mouse down through the options, each line will become clear as the cursor pointer crosses it. All other compositing effects seem to work the same as they did say last year. KDE previously worked perfectly with all compositing features that your video card was capable of, after many years of effort getting that to work. I thought my video card was failing. Only full solution: I toggled off compositing (Alt-shift 12), and this squiggle fill goes away instantly. (I can also log in with compositing turned off of course.)
