Then change your mail client. The gmail webmail is broken in this respect (and others).
Ummmm.. I use GMail and I see all the threads. They are called "Conversations" in GMail speak, but they are the same thing. The only thing that GMail does poorly is it doesn't handle mailing lists nicely... so you have to remember to "fix" the To: address whenever you reply to a message.
