the large files do not compress well anyway (jpg and mpg/mp4 are already compressed). Only text files (.txt) do compress and they a rarely large nowadays
I want to consider compressed filesystems. btrfs has the feature, but I think it is still considered experimental. Combined with snapshots, it would do a nice backup system.
