Can't log in as root

      Yesterday I discovered a strange problem with my SuSE 8.1 box at work.  I
logged out of
KDE, and then tried to log in as root.  It tells me that the login is
incorrect.  However,
as a user, I can su to root using the same password.  I can even change the
password,
but I still can't log in as root.  

BTW, I am not trying to login through a telnet session.  I am trying to log
in at the machine.
