Hey I told them a year ago to do a 'make menuconfig' way of yast install. They halfway have followed my advice but halfway is only half as good as it could have been. -X (yes/no) |----KDE (yes/no) |----konq |----blah |----GNOME (yes/no) |----Messengers |----gaim |----blah |----Other |----gnumeric |----blah |----Other |----Browsers |----Netscape |----what else is there? |----Text Editors |----xvim (does this even exist? =) |----Sound |----xmms |----blah -Sound (yes/no) |----Alsa (yes/no) |----OSS (yes/no) |----Tools |----xmms |----blah -CD-R/RW (yes/no) |----cdrecord |----blah -Messengers |----gaim |----licq |----blah -DEV |----flex |----glibc |----blah A hierarchical way is the only way to satisfy a skilled Linux user. Of course even this implementation must still satisfy the use of package dependencies. I hope everybody noticed the xmms and gaim was twice in the hierarchy tree. That is how it should be. "A package is part of one or more groups. A group is part of zero or more groups." Hmm can't we have something like an XML/LDAP implementation of the SuSE package list? I have to say though the package selection menu we have now is heaps better than the mess we had before. But then again why ask for all these neat features if its gonna be closed-source yast anyhow? mk

Hi all,
I want to discuss & give suggestion for SuSE installer.
(taken from the manual) When installing SuSE, user were provided with this option: * Minimum system * Minumum graphical system * Default system * Default system with office * all
Then this: * Development * Games * Gnome system * All of KDE * Multimedia * Network/Server * Lot of Documentation *** Install available source
1. I found this a bit anoying. Because if I choose all, it required 6.5GB, but if I select default system with office, then I select all of it (dev, games, gnome, kde, multimedia, netwok, doc) it doesn't add up to 6.5GB. I fell like I'm not installing all the program. 2. When I'm selecting multimedia, I didn't know if I also install some Gnome multimedia program.... I want more control over this.
Anybody beside me fell anoyed by this fact???
My suggestion to SuSE were to put a more complex system in the installer... Something like this:
Text X KDE1 KDE2 KDE3 Gnome Development x x x Games x x x x x Multimedia x x x Network/Server x x x
So, I will know when I select multimedia I don't install some gnome multimedia stuff.
Anybody thinks this is a bad idea?? Flame???
