Firstly I have an IBM APTIVA L31. I know that there is quite a lot of proprietary hardware/software on it, and that installing/running LINUX will not be flawless on it, I want to point out that I will be using the computer as a gateway, and a server for other things.........
My experience with Aptivias.... not good. Id estimate you having a difficult time getting the sound (mwave) or modem to work w/o the aptivas software. Once I tried to eliminate the aptiva installion and just install w95 ...on a friends machine, it was ok untill the modem was called up or sound. Do you have the Mwave? If so I seriously doubt if it would work
The computer has a BOOTABLE CD-ROM option on the BIOS, so I just popped in the SuSE CD-1 into the drive and cold booted the system. A very funny thing happened. When it tried to boot the CDROM, all I saw was......
LI 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 80 (and on, and on, and on)
And while it was doing that it was accessing my drive A at about 2-3 times per second.
So I figured use the boot disk.
Presto, it worked properly. However I am still not satisfied. Because I bought a book which had REDHAT 5.1 on it, and the CDROM booted flawlessly and LILO came up without a hitch!! So what is the problem with the SuSE CD?!
I cant say for sure but Id guess the SuSE cdrom isnt bootable ;-)
I hope someone can help me with that question.
Now time for a request........
Anyways, I installed LINUX and was not happy with the modules I installed, plus I tinkered around with it to such an extent that it got buggered up. I tried to do a graphical login, and everything works properly till the login prompt comes and the screen just flickers......meaning, it appears, and disappears, appears and disappears, roughly about once a second. Oh and when I press a key on the keyboard, it takes about 10 seconds of continuous pressing before a character appears on the screen.
One thing I did notice in the boot log was a mention about KDM. Perhaps that can help you gurus solve my problem.
Now the request I have is that I managed to wipe out my install disk that came with SuSE 5.3. Can someone please........
1. Attach an image with the RAWRITE util, so that I can restore the floppy. 2. Direct me to the SuSE FTP site's proper URL that has that image file.
If you look at any messages on the list there are links to suses site which Im sure they have boot disks available for dl.
