Of course it can:
checkinstall install
or any other command used for installing, even a long untar command. I told you so on friday ;-)
Didn't see your response - possibly didn't arrive here, don't know. But thanks for the above. I've made a note of it and will use this method in the future. (Maybe if I did this now all it would do is overwrite what is there already and then I can use rpm -e to uninstall. I'll try this on the testbed computer first.)
