I have P11 300 64mb ram, Voodooo 3 2000 AGP running SuSE 6.3. I have tried all of the above and find the following :
Running the Glutdemos and most do not run at all especially Rollercoaster and Skyfly:
Rollercoaster doesn't seem to want to run in fullscreen mode, but Skyfly does. Are you getting fullscreen mode? If not, that means that you probably don't have 'MESA_GLX_FX=fullscreen' set properly.
I personally haven't seen an option to get rollercoaster to run in full-screen. Skyfly, OTOH, runs beautifully on my Banshee. I have the MESA_GLX_FX variable exported in my ~/.xinitrc as well. Don't forget to `chmod 666 /dev/3dfx'.
I have/had both of those set
Other misc. notes:
Make sure that mesasoft is not installed. Mesasoft directly conflicts with mesa3dfx, and will slow you down.
I have not installed Mesasoft Any time you start a full-screen demo or
screen saver, you should see the twirling 3Dfx logo. glide_v3 is the glide package you need, but don't forget glide_sdk. I was getting the logo but nothing much else
Running Xracer and tux_agfh, which just sit there and do nothing;
Both of these work well and in fullscreen mode for me, keep on trying.
When you configure the X server with SaX, set a normal mode (say, 1024x768) in 16-bit color in the Desktop tab. 16-bit is the Banshee/V3's native mode, so anything else is a waste of time. While you're in Desktop, click on the Expert button, and set an alternate resolution of 640x480 (also 16-bit). This should allow your default resolution to come up on startup, and it will automatically go to 640x480 when you start things like Xracer and Tux:AQFH.
That's it !! The games now work. Thank you Jon and also David Bellows for his earlier answers. It's getting a problem like this solved that keeps me using SuSE and this list. Thanks again.
