well, thanks to the the tip on command line execution and error reports, I was able to install a command-line program, called avi2svcd and ran it. After installing some missing programs, like toolame, I almost had it working. Not sure exactly what was still wrong with avi2svcd, but I tried kavi2svcd again, and IT DID WORK! this morning I had installed apt4rpm on my 9.3 setup ( I had it working on 9.2) and ran the update and upgrade. I had to uninstall some packages to get rid of dependency issues, then I reinstalled those programs, and started AGAIN to try and get kavi2svcd working! apt-get update said I had to uninstall freepops ( my yahoo 3rd party app), which said it was missing linux-gate.so.1 , but I think I solved that too.

Hehe, you don't know how strange the world is ... I have never used kavi2svcd, just gave you a tip which may help to diagnose the problem. And just today I need to use kavi2svcd. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work right on my 9.1. By "not work right" I mean it starts, I can select the avi file, and then it runs some "frame skipping", etc., messages in the 2 boxes, and that's it. Is says that if the 2 pictures are not the same, I have to select the checkbox. But in the boxes I have text, not pictures. So, I guess something is not right. But if I click "start" button, it starts to reencode> I'll see the result in a couple of hours ... Cheers Sunny
