This will give you a clue;
$ sudo mv sddm.conf sddm.conf-bak
/etc/sddm.conf or /etd/sddm.conf.d/sddm.conf
Thank you /etc/sddm.conf.d is a folder but it's empty And the shift to low-res affected several distros the same way over a couple of weeks, the one exception being Tumbleweed where the original resolution survives but only if I log in before doing startx
