Hi, I tried to use LibreOffice to open a .doc file for a friend of mine so he could fill it out for a job app. However, it won't open up in LO Writer (LibreOffice 3.5:build-413) correctly on Opensuse 12.1 or 12.2 on three different computers.
"That thing never works!"
Bull. :) I could post hundreds of screenshots of myself using LO to manage multiple-hundred page documents and it working perfectly.
I opened a bug a few years ago for OpenOffice regarding addresses on an attached envelope to a Word document that open up correctly in Word in Windows, Softmaker Textmaker in Linux, and Kingsley Writer in Windows. But when I open the same document in LibreOffice in Linux or Windows today, several years later, the "To" address on the envelope won't appear on the envelope, it will appear anywhere else on the document than where it is supposed to show up. Same as the original bug of several years ago.
Specifically, it doesn't provide a correct graphic display of the document. Also, it doesn't allow anyone to type in information in the appropriate blocks.
Perhaps the document is open read-only? Because then you can't type anything into it - it will not let you modify a document if it knows your changes are going to be lost [if you save the file to a filename then it becomes RW].
Document was saved, opens in LO in two computers and I can write in the blocks, but in two others it won't.
-Skymark 2 shows the document opened with LibreOffice Writer. One may see that there is a superimposed block on the top of the second page on the right, placed in the wrong position on the document. LO won't allow the cursor to be placed in any block to type information into the application.
Yes, I have seen funky table flow from imported documents in the past. Table placement is the most buggy issue I have seen going back-and-forth between applications; possibly second is font-mapping, which can cause size changes [that isn't really a 'bug' however, if font X isn't available it has to be replaced by something - and thus size changes are inevitable].
Yet this doesn't happen with the three other word processor programs that I use. This has been an ongoing issue with OO/LO since I began to use the program when I first installed opensuse 10.1. I will detail in the following paragraphs why I raised this issue now in this post to the mail list. Some must know how to correct this, as I suspect you do. I don't know how, but could probably figure it out given enough time to work on it. More to the point, my friend that was trying to figure out how to fill out the application on his computer can't figure it out. He just barely knows how to use a computer, and really doesn't have much interest in learning them. When he runs across a problem like this, it is insurmountable for him. He just wants to use LO as a word processor, and doesn't want to figure out the nuts and bolts of it to make it work. He just wants and needs it to work, easily. So I see the issue with LO/OO as a usability issue that really should be corrected.
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/4830/23646315.png -Skymark 3 shows that LO has invented a second blank page for the document, which doesn't show up in any other word processing program (Textmaker, MS Word). I have scrolled down to near the bottom of the first page to show the blank second page residing under the first.
Expected if there is some overflow because the size of objects is calculated slightly differently. This issue goes both ways, or in all directions.
Perhaps someone knows how to rectify this situation and set LO to working correctly. I hope that no one is offended by Rocky and Bullwinkle. They were just having a little fun.
Only in that you are very much overstating the case. Well, yes, guilty as charged. It was an attempt at some innocent humor because of my experience with OO/LO, but I think that I have offended you with it. I am sorry for that.
Please don't view my comment as a bitter denunciation of LO, it is not intended to be construed in that manner. My friend just needs the word processor to work easily, and it doesn't. It seems that there are some ongoing issues that if corrected, would make the program usability much better. That is what I am trying to convey, and I used some hyperbole to get my point across. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
