My apologies if this seems to be hijacking a thread...but I have had similar issues with sound. Just did without. All modules below load, including specific ones for my sound card. Test sound plays in yast install so sound does work, but no program, including volume control can find a mixer installed. Opening Kmix, for example, just gives a grayed out box with no options under drop down menu box. Worked in 10.0, not in 10.2, all current updates installed, did not work from initial install or with any update since. Card is onboard with MSI MB, uses snd-ca0106, which shows in lsmod. No idea where to go from here. Modules seem to be loaded, mixer and programs are installed, sound works at install level, just no communication betweent he two after that. Again my apologies if this is hijacking. I hope rather that this will be similar to William's issue and that at some point maybe both can be solved together. More info would be helpful... which card /driver? new install? ever worked before /previous suse release? log file error messages?
Sometimes what happens is that one or more related drivers do not load (like snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss) .
You can use lsmod as root:
sudo lsmod
... and look for these kinds of modules:
snd_pcm_oss 42016 0 snd_mixer_oss 18048 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_seq 47056 0 snd_seq_device 8716 1 snd_seq
snd_hda_intel 18708 1 <=== card specific snd_hda_codec 148784 1 snd_hda_intel <=== card specific snd_pcm 82696 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec snd_timer 23428 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd 54464 10 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_code c,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 9184 1 snd snd_page_alloc 10376 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
Try to figure out what isn't loading.
