And, BTW, tape backups are really nice in situations like this. I know, in the worst case, you just have to backup all your data, mail, and passwords database, and do a complete reinstall from scratch (ie: doing 'mke2fs' as well), which I think you might have to do.

Kenneth, Thanks for the offer, but the forced update to the system seems to have fix all the problems I was having. I contacted MMA by phone and asked them about the problem. The same person who I mailed the day before about the problem was the one with whom I spoke. She said that her husband runs MMA on linux and has not had a problem with the password when compiling the kernel. She also said their tech support did not think I should have a problem. Perhaps it was the combination of the recompile and the replacement of the OS files that confused MMA.
