Incidentially, IPv4 addressing is a hack. Originally, in the demo version of IPv4, there were 256 networks with 24 bits for hosts. This obviously was not enough to be practical, so address classes were created. Then, as the Internet became popular, even that wasn't enough, so CIDR, with variable length subnets, was created. This increases the workload on routers. With IPv6, the address is split into 64 bits for the network address and 64 bits for the host address within the network.
