HI I just finished re-compiling the 2.2.17 kernel and have the same "char-msg-4 missing" error message. It doesn't sem to be hurting anything, and my SuSE 6.3 router/firewall box seems to be doing everything that it was doing before I compiled the kernel. I have not tried everything yet, including the added modules that I wanted to include. But I am hoping that someone here knows what this "char-msg-4 missing" error message is all about. I eagerly await the answer...) Doug Roberts dgr@sk.sympatico.ca -----------------------------------------------------------------

I have a question. Is there a way to temporarily stop the boot up process so that you can read/study the messages? I've looked at dmesg, but not all of the messages are in there. like the error messages
don't
show up. Weird! or, where are the error messages written?

Yes, it doesn't contain the error messages either.
