Which desktop are you using? Is another application using the sound card - run "System Monitor" and see?
Running just a amaroK. But problem is same if it is close or not.
Are you using the artsd backend with amaroK? If so, closing amaroK will not automatically kill the artsd instance which will keep the audio device busy.
Do 'ps ax | grep artsd' and see if arts is still running; then you could kill those instances ('killall artsd') which should resolve your problem.
I did but Real Player doesn't work...but works as i run as root!
