Mates,
Suse 10.3, kde, compiz. The screen freezes on log out and will not return you to the login prompt. You can see the text screen from boot flash just for a second before kdm tries to restore the login. The the screen goes blank. (not totally black like off, the display is still active, it's just black) The system is hardlocked and must be hard reset. ctrl+alt+[either del or backspace] has no effect. Lockup occurs regardless of whether the WM is kwin or compiz. The logs are empty.
When this happens, have you tried accessing a virtual console (CTRL+ALT+N where N is 1 through 6) to log in an run diagnostic or restorative commands? If you cannot, have you tried logging in via ssh for the same reason?
What should I check or what link can I read to start to sort this out? thanks.
Is this repeatable, or has it just happened once? If repeatable, does it occur 100% of the time? If it's a one-time (or rare) thing, it might be the Reiser FS hang problem (Bug 336669: <https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=336669>), but this never manifests itself the same way twice, other than that one or more processes end up permanently hung in a D wait state. It seems to strike any process at any time and is (my hunch) a concurrency bug. Do you have a HT, multi-core or multi-processor system?
