how about "nsswitch.conf"... default is:
#hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns wins
which seems a bit problematic.... but I use:
hosts: files dns wins
Maybe something is responding on mdns4_minimal with notfound?
If he is running bind on his firewall box, it doesn't look at hosts at all.
